The Heart of a Disciple Maker
1 Corinthians 4:14-21
Pastor Scott Roen
1 Corinthians 4:14-21
As a master disciple maker, Paul nurtures spiritual growth with the heart of a gospel-saturated father.
For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. Vs. 15
As a master disciple maker, Paul reaches out to the Corinthians with the heart of a gospel-saturated father.
The application for us is to be gospel-saturated disciple makers.
Three ways Paul shows us how to be gospel-saturated disciple makers
I. Admonish – Not Shame – Vs. 14
Admonish – there is something wrong with your behavior
Shame – there is something wrong with you.
1 Corinthians 1:4-9
II. Be An Example – Not Lord It Over – Vs. 16-17
1 Peter 5:1-4
Romans 7:21
1 Tim 1:15
Romans 7:24-25a
1 Corinthians 4:17
III. Remain Engaged – Not Become Detached – Vs. 18-21
ACCOUNTABILITY that is not helpful
A willing decision to abide by certain standards and a voluntary submission of oneself to be reviewed by others in which one’s performance is evaluated in light of these standards.
(Transforming Discipleship, Greg Ogden– Pg 157-158)
ACCOUNTABILITY that is helpful
…a time when ordinary Christians allowed “free, unreserved communication of their souls, mutual exchange of their hearts, faithful revelations of the spiritual state of their consciences one unto another . . . in ardent sanctified affection.”
(Puritan pastor Robert Bolton (1572–1631)
Ironman ACCOUNTABILITY
Intentional conversations that lead to spiritual growth
Rom 1:11-12
The heart of a disciple maker is to be a gospel-saturated disciple maker
Sermon Discussion Questions
Questions for reflection:
1. In your conversations, have you ever fallen into the trap of shaming the person you are talking with? What might you do differently in the future?
2. What did you learn from this sermon that might encourage you to to present yourself as an example to others?
3. How does the material presented today on accountability challenge your idea of making disciples? What might help you be more gospel-saturated in the way you think of accountability?
4. If you are in a disciple making relationship, what ideas presented in this sermon helped you to better reflect the gospel in your ministry? What changes, if any, are you going to make?
5. If you are not in a disciple making relationship, how might the ideas presented in this sermon encourage you to take that step?
Question for discussion:
1. Read Gal 6:1-5. Find the ideas presented in the sermon on 1 Cor 4:17-21?
